Cox Plate
The W.S. Cox Plate is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 1 Australian horse race for 3 years old and over and is a weight for age event.
It is contested over a distance of 2040 metres and is held annually at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne in late October during the Spring Racing Carnival.
Prize money for the Cox Plate is worth $3,000,000.
History
The inaugural Cox Plate was run in 1922 and was won by Violoncello and carried maximum prize money of 1000 pounds.
The Moonee Valley Committee decided to run a weight-for-age race and calling it the Cox Plate in honour of the founder of Moonee Valley, Sam Cox.
Because it was strategically placed on the race calendar between the Caulfield Cup, Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup, the Cox Plate became a race of high importance and prestige.
Many racing experts regard the Cox Plate as 'the greatest two minutes in sport'.
From its inauguration, the Cox Plate has been acknowledged as one of the classic races in international horse racing. Almost every successor has been an outstanding horse - Phar Lap, Kingston Town, Rising Fast, Dulcify, Gunsynd, Super Impose, Octagonal, Might and Power, and Sunline's double-header in 1999 and 2000. The list of winners reads like a Who Who's of the Australian turf.
And since 1999, the Cox Plate is the only southern hemisphere event to be included in the World Series. The World Series is horse racing's Grand Prix circuit, spanning both hemispheres and four continents.
As Australasia's most glamourous race, the Cox Plate induction in the series in 1999 sees it listed with the world's best races including the Japan Cup (Japan), the Hong Kong International Cup (HK), Arlington Million (USA), Canadian International (Canada), Breeders Cup Turf and Breeders Cup Classic (USA), Irish Champion Stakes (Ireland), Grosser Preis Von Baden (Germany), and the Kind George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot (UK).
It is no surprise that the Cox Plate is called the 'greatest two minutes in sport' and its total prize money has reacted accordingly going over the $3 million dollars.
The race has many great moments including the great Sunline and her 7 length win in 2000 and champion gelding Kingston Town winning 3 Cox Plates in a row in the eighties, and the the list goes on.
The 2009 WS Cox Plate winner was the Bart Cummings' trained three-year-old So You Think beating Manhattan Rain with Zipping in third place.

There is a number of different races the final 2010 Cox Plate field may come from, including the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600 metres), Yalumba Stakes (2000 metres), or Toorak Handicap (1600 metres) which are all held a 2 weeks before on Caulfield Guineas Day.
Earlier races to look out for prior to the Cox Plate include the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800 metres) in September, the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600 metres) and the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600 metres).
